Montana Angler's West: May 11 Missouri River Fishing Report
Going over 10,000 in flow as of yesterday. Little Prickly Pear, Wagner, Stickney Creeks as well as the Dearborn all seemed to have topped out and are on the drop now so not as much off colored and debris filled water will be adding to the MO. Clarity will be improving. Yet, it still fished well through the past couple days. The jumps in flow that have been attributed to the increases at the dam on Holter have a greater effect upon the fishing it seems. The MO is pretty much officially in the Big Water stage now and looks to be through the coming weeks. Dry fly fishing is pretty much on the skids. Break out the BIG bobbers and long leaders. BB, 3/0 are good size split shot. Everyone's talking bout the year of the wire worm again.... Remember last June? I get a smile on my face thinking back! Craig, MT is going to be home away from home for the next month or longer at least right now. Don't expect solitude on this river, but it's all right. Life in Craig during high water is like a carnival. Come join the fun!
Hatches: beatis midges March Browns on the lower river Caddis should be starting
Hot Patterns:
Dries: Not much.
Nymphs: Dirt Snake- Mexican Baetis- whatever you want to call it is fine but fishing the Worm is plainly the go to fly! So-san juans of all sizes and colors are what you need and you need them in spades. Clouser Crayfish and large Rubberlegs are a second go-to big bug leader. Follow these with Czech caddis pupa, fire bead ray charles, wonder and lightning, purple lightning bug, micro mayfly,FB PT, little green machines, shop vacs and you'll be good to go.
Streamers: Guess you could say the Clouser Cray is also a streamer, Circus peanuts, Sex Dungeon, Skiddish Smolt. Give any of these a try if/when you get tired of chasing the bobber....
