Montana Angler's West: May 11 Madison River Fishing Report
Lower River below Ennis lake is once again a viable option. Clarity is still an issue as it's a bit on the off-clear version again. Although not the high degree of sediment that was seen earlier due to the Lake Effect. The lower is fishing decently with tons of good baetis activity. Fish are grabby on the usual under surface concoctions of a crayfish or san juan and a dropper combo. Look for weed bed edges and drop-offs. Caddis should be coming on as well. Clean water and great flow levels continue to see the Upper fishing well. No longer will you likely have the place to yourself however. With the number of clear and good fishing locations on a daily decline due to runoff, the Upper Maddy is attracting attention for the time being. It won't necessarily be all that long before this one goes too. Fishing is pretty much all about finding the deeper slots, runs, and pools that have off speed water as well. It's almost all nymphing right now for consistency. Concentrate on deep nymphing with either stonefly nymphs, eggs or san juans (or both) and a midge pupa or the like as a trailer. REMINDER: Upper Maddy is closed from Quake to MacAtee and again from Ennis Bridge to the Lake for another couple of weeks (Sat May 21). Ennis and Valley Garden access locations remain closed and likely will be for some time to come due to the incredible amount of ice gorge damage they received over the winter.
