Montana Angler: May 16 Upper Madison Fishing Report
The Upper is only open between the lakes (Hebgen and Quake) and from McAtee bridge to Ennis. One of our guides floated this two days ago and reported a
banner day nymphing sculpins and worms in the slicks along banks and behind rocks. Baetis are now on the upper and the hatch will intensify with time. March
Browns are also a great hatch on the upper and can raise some very large fish in slower slicks. The caddis are just showing up on the Upper river. Trout are still
favoring the softer water with the cold temps so don't waste time in the heavy water that will become more productive in the summer. Mornings are slow and
fishing improves as the temps increase. Water levels are slowly rising below some of the big tributaries but the upper river will be in awesome shape for the
general opener on May 21st.
