Sharing the Bristol Bay Story with Children
The latest issue of Stream Explorers, Trout Unlimited's magazine for kids, takes a look at salmon-rich Bristol Bay in Southwest Alaska, and what's at stake if the proposed Pebble mine goes forward. The issue profiles three people who fish the waters of Bristol Bay both commercially and for subsistence. All three hail from the Bristol Bay region and do contract work for Trout Unlimited, helping to organize opposition to Pebble.
Bristol Bay is home to the world's largest sockeye salmon run, with 40 million salmon returning to spawn last summer, and it produces some of the biggest rainbow trout on the planet. Unfortunately the future health and abundance of these fish could be in jeopardy if Pebble gets developed because the giant copper and gold mine would almost certainly taint with ground and surface waters with toxic waste that would drain into Bristol Bay.
